Tamil Nadu lost due to bifurcation of Madras: Ramadoss

Tamil Nadu has lost a lot than gained by the bifurcation of the state on linguistic basis six decades ago, said PMK founder S. Ramadoss on Monday.

It was on November 1, 1956 the States Reorganisation Act came into effect after it was enacted on August 31, 1956, and the Madras Presidency was divided into what are know the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Telangana and Puducherry.

In a statement on the eve of the state's 60th anniversary, Ramadoss said Tamil Nadu lost a lot than what it gained when states were divided on linguistic basis.

He said though Kanyakumari was part of Kerala but came under Tamil Nadu due to agitation, several parts of what should have been Tamil Nadu went to Andhra Pradesh and Kerala which in turn has resulted in inter-state water fights.

If not for the agitation spearheaded by late M.P.Sivagnanam (popularly known as Ma.Po.Si ) and K. Vinayagam, many more parts of the present day Tamil Nadu would have gone to Andhra Pradesh, he added.

DMK President M.Karunanidhi however extended his greeting to the people on the occasion of 60th anniversary of linguistic division of the Indian states and saluted those who fought for naming the state as Tamil Nadu.

He recalled it was the then DMK Chief Minister C.N.Annadurai who moved the resolution to rename the state as Tamil Nadu on July 18, 1967.
