Actress Charmian Carr, who essayed the role of Liesl in "The Sound of Music" alongside veteran actors Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, has died at the age of 73. Her associates mourned her death.

Carr died of complications from a rare form of dementia on September 17.

Kym Karath, who played Gretl Von Trapp, the youngest sibling in the Von Trapp family from "The Sound of Music", expressed her grief over Carr's death.

"It is with infinite sadness that I share the tragic news that the precious and exquisite Charmian Carr, beautiful Liesl, has passed away," Karath posted on Twitter.

She later posted a photograph of her and Carr, and captioned it: "One of Charmian's and many happy times together. She has been like a sister throughout my life. Excruciating."

Comedian-actor Seth MacFarlene said: "So very saddened to hear of the death of Charmian Carr. She leaves behind one of the most memorable performances in movie history."

A tribute to the beautiful actress was also paid by American film studio, distributor, 20th Century Fox, which produced the evergreen drama.

"'The Sound of Music' lost a beloved member of the family with the passing of Charmian Carr. She will be forever missed," read a post from the official Twitter handle of the studio.

Carr was 21 when she starred in "The Sound of Music", and became known for singing one its most famous songs, "I am sixteen going on seventeen".

After leaving showbiz, Charmian became an interior designer and listed celebrities including Michael Jackson as clients. She is survived by daughters Jennifer and Emily and four grandchildren.
