A Sri Lankan court Tuesday sentenced three LTTE members, including a woman, over a deadly train bombing in which 70 people were killed and nearly 400 injured 17 years ago.

Two men were awarded 10 years rigorous imprisonment while the woman got a five-year term for the 1996 attack, Xinhua reported.

The three were jailed by Colombo High Court Judge Kumudini Wickramasinghe for the bombing which took place in Dehiwala, on the outskirts of Colombo.

All three had pleaded guilty over their involvement in the bombing.

The July 24 attack was carried out by Tamil Tiger operatives by placing suitcase bombs in four carriages on a commuter train. The simultaneous explosions caused a large number of casualties.

The Tamil Tigers were defeated in May 2009 with the military regaining control over all the areas in the north and east of the country held by the rebels.
