The toll in a bridge collapse in China's Guangdong province Sunday rose to 11, authorities said.

The under-construction bridge in Liangkengkou village of Gaozhou City collapsed at around 1 p.m. Saturday killing five people on the spot, Xinhua reported.

Rescuers pulled 27 people out of the debris, including five who were confirmed dead on the spot and eight others with serious injuries, a publicity official of the province said.

Six of those seriously wounded later succumbed in a hospital.

The contractor, who was building the bridge, has been taken into police custody.
