Two children, helper die as daycare van falls into pond

Two children and a woman attendant were drowned when their day care centre's van with eight children and the woman fell into a pond near here on Monday evening, police said.

Kochi City Police Commissioner M.P. Dinesh told reporters that two children and their helper died in the incident.

According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle had dropped three kids and was proceding on, when it fell into the pond belonging to a temple.

While the driver rescued five of the children, he was unable to rescue the other two and the attendant.

Another of the children and the driver himself are currently under medical observation.

Local authorities decided to hand over the two bodies of the children without any autopsy, while the woman's body will be handed over to her relatives on Tuesday after the post-mortem examination.

Two years back a tipper lorry had fallen into the pond and since then the locals have been demanding the Kochi Corporation of barricade the pond but to no avail.
