Mosul (Iraq), Sep 16 (IANS/EFE) Two gunmen belonging to the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group were killed in separate incidents Tuesday in the centre of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, security sources told Efe news agency.

The first attack took place in the Al Cornish area where a man used a silenced weapon to shoot the IS member, whose group has controlled Mosul since June.

The second victim, identified as Abu Omar Khattab, worked as a policeman in the jihadi group and was killed in the area known as the Fifth Bridge.

Although it was not immediately clear who carried out the shootings, the "Mosul Brigades" took responsibility for recent killings of IS militia members in a communique distributed in the city centre.

The note said that several radical fighters were killed in bombings that targeted two IS vehicles in the centre and in the south of Mosul.

Earlier this month, the "Mosul Brigades" claimed responsibility for the murders of six IS members in Mosul and threatened to continue its operations to "eliminate and expel all outsiders who defiled, occupied and looted the city's wealth".

Late in July, several armed groups began to surface in Mosul to fight the IS jihadis who have committed atrocities on their opponents and religious minorities in the city.
