Two soldiers were killed in a clash after leftist rebels attacked a construction site on Saturday night in the Philippines, military said on Sunday.

One soldier was wounded in the clash, Xinhua news agency reported.

Major Angelo Guzman, spokesman of southern Luzon command, said a squad of soldiers was securing a bridge project in Labo in Camarines Norte province when the members of rebel left outfit New People's Army (NPA) launched an attack late Saturday.

During the attack, which lasted for more than one hour, two soldiers were killed and one was injured. The rebels withdrew without any confirmed casualty.

The 4,000-strong NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, is waging an insurgency in 60 provinces of the Philippines.
