United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) leader Anup Chetia -- who was deported by Bangladesh on Wednesday -- was on Thursday sent to CBI custody on six-day transit remand, sources in the probe agency said.
"Chetia has been booked by the CBI in a 1988 murder case in Assam," a source told IANS.
Explaining about Chetia's transit remand, the CBI source told IANS: "We have put him in our custody in Delhi, so he was produced before a competent court in Delhi. As he was involved in a murder case in Assam, we were given his transit remand for six days."
"After completing the transit remand, Chetia would be produced in a designated court in Assam."
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered the case on March 21, 1988 at the request of the Assam government in connection with an alleged killing on August 29, 1986 in Golaghat in Assam.
Bangladesh Rifles handed over the ULFA general secretary to the Border Security Force at Dawki -- a border centre between India and Bangladesh -- in Meghalaya on Wednesday. He was later flown to Delhi by the CBI.
Chetia was arrested from his plush apartment in North Adabar in Dhaka in 1997 for illegally entering Bangladesh and for illegally carrying foreign currency and a satellite phone. He was tried and sent to jail.
