UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met with African Union (AU) chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and the two leaders vowed to enhance peace and security.
"During the meeting, the two leaders discussed the strategic partnership between the UN and the AU and ways to continue to enhance such a cooperation in the area of peace and security," Ban's spokesman said.
They also reviewed challenges to peace and security in Africa, including the situation in Libya, Mali, Somalia, South Sudan and the Great Lakes Region, Xinhua quoted the spokesman as saying.
"Ban reaffirmed the UN's commitment to a strengthened partnership with the AU and Regional Economic Communities (REC)," the spokesman said.
The secretary-general also briefed the chairperson about the UN's efforts to combat the spread of the Ebola disease in West Africa, the spokesman added.
