The Uttar Pradesh government on Thursday urged 'Siksha Mitras' not to indulge in violence after the Supreme Court ruled they will not be assimilated as teachers.

A government spokesman said the Additional Chief Secretary (Basic Education) has been authorized to hold parleys with representatives of 'Siksha Mitras'.

The 1.37 lakh 'Siksha Mitras' are contractual teachers. Many have launched sit-in protests at some places in the state.

The government has requested them to have patience. It has said it was studying what could be done in the wake of the apex court ruling.

Thousands of 'Siksha Mitras' have taken to the streets after the apex court quashed their assimilation. Violence has been reported from Etawah, Agra, Mainpuri, Farukkhabad, Meerut, Bijnore and Bareilly districts.

Minister of State for Basic Education Anupama Jaiswal said that while the government will implement the apex court order with immediate effect, its sympathies were with the 'Siksha Mitras'.
