Slamming the Uttar Pradesh government for "protecting the corrupt", the Congress on Friday referred to Governor Ram Naik's letter to the Chief Minister regarding a bribery demand accusation against a senior officer in the CMO.

"The BJP government was trying to protect the corrupt and penalise the innocent by sending them to jail," the party said.

Citing a letter written by businessman Abhishek Gupta to Naik, in which he accused the Chief Minister's Principal Secretary S.P. Goyal of asking for Rs 25 lakh in a land case related a petrol pump, Congress Spokesperson Shaktisinh Gohil said: "The Governor forwarded the letter to the Chief Minister and demanded a probe. The letter states nothing has been done on Gupta's file as he has not paid the bribe. Even as the probe in the case was on, the complainant was sent to jail on the basis of an audio clip in which Gupta is in conversation with someone."

Gohil said: "The accused went scot-free while the complainant was sent to jail. They create an atmosphere of fear so that no one raises voice agianst BJP's corruption. Anybody who does it will be penalised."

"The BJP government is providing protection to those who indulge in corruption. Action is being taken against those unravelling corruption rather than those indulging in it," he added.
