US fighter planes on Monday attacked over a hundred oil trucks used by the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, to transport crude oil from the regions it controls in Syria.

A total of 116 tankers were destroyed in the attacks that took place near Deir al Zur, a region controlled by the IS near Syria's border with Iraq, EFE news reported.

The attack was aimed at disrupting one of the major sources of revenue for the terror outfit.

It was carried out by four A-10 attack planes and two AC-130 gunships based in Turkey.

The US believes the IS can generate as much as $40 million a month by producing and exporting oil from the region it controls in Syria and Iraq, which it has declared a "caliphate".

The US attacks coincide with French airstrikes beginning late Sunday in Raqqa, one of IS' main stronghold in Syria.

The French airstrikes came as a retaliation to the deadly November 13 attacks across Paris that killed 129 people and left 350 others injured, 98 of them critically.
