Damascus, July 8 (IANS/AKI) An Uzbek leader of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group was killed in a US-led coalition air raid in the northern Syrian town of Raqqa, activists from a Britain-based monitor said on Wednesday.

The unnamed Uzbek IS leader died in a drone strike on a car he was travelling in, the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights activists said on Twitter.

The Uzbek was allegedly responsible for security in Raqqa, the "capital" of IS's self-declared "caliphate" encompassing swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria.

The Syrian Observatory of Human Rights relies for its information on a network of activists and doctors inside Syria.
