Police fired in the air and lobbed tear gas on Tuesday following a clash between two groups of prisoners in a jail in Deoria in Uttar Pradesh, officials said.

An unspecified number of prisoners were injured in the free for all, triggered apparently by an altercation over drug consumption.

Prisoners broke out of their barracks and indulged in the violence. Police fired 30 rounds in the air besides tear gas to bring the situation under control.

The police and prison authorities searched the barracks taken over by police. Some gas cylinders and banned items have been confiscated.

Riots have broken out in prisons in Meerut, Faizabad, Azamgarh and Varanasi in recent times.
