Bihar State Commission for Extremely Backward Castes (EBCs) chairman Ratan Kumar Mandal on Thursday said that the rich and well-off among the EBCs should not avail of the benefits of reservation in government jobs.
"The rich and well-off among the EBCs should not avail of the reservation benefit. Only the poorest of the poor and economically backward people should get reservation in jobs," Mandal said.
The ruling Janata Dal-United and Rashtriya Janata Dal distanced from Mandal's remarks, with leaders of both parties maintaining that "it is Mandal's personal view and it has nothing to do with the ruling alliance".
Mandal said people like him did not need reservation. "I and people like me from the EBCs should not get the reservation in jobs."
The state Congress opposed Mandal's views on the reservation issue.
