If you’re wondering what’s behind Communications Minister A Raja’s sudden statement about releasing the information memorandum on 3G auctions, the attitude of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh may have something to do with it. The Prime Minister’s Office sent a letter to Raja’s ministry a few days ago asking for a fortnightly report on the progress of the 3G auctions. A prescribed format has been enclosed asking for a timeline on various aspects of the auction, the action taken so far and the action expected to be taken in the next 10 days. In other words, even after the ministry comes out with the information memorandum — as it has earlier — it will have to continue to follow up to ensure nothing derails the process.
