After setting up a special biodiversity park exclusively for butterflies at Jamshedpur, Tata Steel has added another feather in its cap. It has managed to breed and propagate 11 rare species of butterflies, and research is underway to breed other species as well. By the end of 2015, the Tata Steel zoo plans to build a repository of all the species of butterflies found in Jharkhand’s east Singhbhum district and play a major role in the habitat restoration of the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary. According to the zoo’s head, Bipul Chakraborty, there are about 40 species that are found in the district and most of these are disappearing due to the depletion of forest areas.
