The Railways’ finances may be in the red, but the platforms in Kolkata are all green. Ever since Trinamool leader Mamata Banerjee became railway minister, she has had every conceivable solid surface on suburban platforms near Kolkata painted green, the official colour of her party. Seats, shades, lamp posts, ticket counters, water taps and the writing are already a dazzling green and yellow. It’s possible that the Railways may have some green paint left over, which is why the colour is being used to paint the cemented floors of platforms green. Howrah station may be miles away from being world class but the promise of a green splash in Bengal by the minister seems more than a commitment as of now.
