The current regime's focus on Hindi can be tough on government servants who may not have cause to use the language frequently. Thus, a ministry of external affairs spokesman found himself confusing two words that sound almost the same but have vastly different meanings. He used the word parinay, which means wedding, when he meant to say parinaam, which means result or outcome. Worse, the slip-up occurred just when the government was observing Hindi Week. Coming from a seasoned bureaucrat, the error triggered a flurry of comments on social media. One such comment read: "Hindi Week should be renamed as 'Hindi is Weak'."
