This refers to Kishan S Rana’s article “Battle lines of the 1962 war” (September 17). Perhaps the writer forgot to mention that Wang Ping-nan was secretly conducting Sino-US talks for 14 years – from the mid-1950s to 1964 – behind the Soviet Union’s back. In fact, Wang Ping-nan told me in 1968 that even the KGB had no clue about these talks all through the 14 years. So, these secret Sino-US parleys began under the Republicans (from 1953 to June 29, 1961) and carried on even during the two Democrat regimes! Several US ambassadors to Poland took part in it. But Wang Ping-nan was the only ambassador from the Chinese side.
