Letters: Fiscal deficit target

Apropos "Light at the end of the tunnel" (April 4) by Ashok K Bhattacharya, I endorse the views that the finance ministry's tendency to declare an attractive, revised fiscal deficit number for 2015-16 at 3.9 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP) to show off fiscal consolidation is unnecessary since it has won the battle of fiscal consolidation last fiscal.

Since the global financial situation is still not stable - China is looking at dwindling growth and the Indian economy, though stable, might also be affected by global headwinds - it would be prudent for the ministry to concentrate on meeting the fiscal deficit target of 3.5 per cent of the GDP and economic growth of eight per cent for 2016-17 rather than fiddling with data.
