Letters: Making PSUs work

Pratip Kar’s article “The conundrums of public sector boards” (July 11) made for an interesting read. Good public sector undertakings (PSUs) are the ones that are governed well. All PSU chiefs are bound by memorandums of understanding (MoUs). These MoUs are accountability statements and CEOs can be held responsible if the objectives listed in the MoUs are not achieved. This can be done provided the CEOs are given enough autonomy to achieve their goals. If, however, a PSU fails to achieve its target despite adequate autonomy and enforced accountability then it is a case of sheer incompetence.
