Letters: Plugging judicial loopholes

This refers to the report "Katju alleges three former CJIs made improper compromises" (July, 21). The reactions of the United Progressive Alliance politicians to Markandey Katju's sensational expose have been on predictable lines, with several of them questioning its timing. One Member of Parliament (MP) even pointed out that Katju, as the chief justice of the Madras High Court, had no problem allocating a case for adjudication to the judge who he is now accusing of corruption. Is it the MP's contention that a chief justice should allow a politically influential judge, facing charges, to draw full salary without doing any judicial work? Raising such objections to the expose is to sidestep the issue. The real issue before the judiciary and the government is to plug the loopholes in the system, so that there is no recurrence of such instances and the badly shaken public confidence in the independence of judiciary is restored.
