The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday closed a six-year-old disproportionate assets (DA) case against Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, citing ‘lack of evidence’.

The development is being interpreted in political circles as the Congress-led UPA’s largesse to the ruling SP in Uttar Pradesh with an eye on the 2014 elections. SP extends outside support to the UPA government at the Centre.

Not long ago the apex court had come down heavily on the CBI, accusing it of being a “caged parrot” answerable to its “political masters”.

While the CBI move helped the SP and its chief, the Congress on Friday lashed at the Akhilesh Yadav-led SP government in UP for “failing” to contain communal violence in Muzaffarnagar and demanded the chief minister’s resignation.
