Launching a counter-offensive against former ally BJP for alleging a spurt in the crime graph of Bihar since it left the government, JD(U) today quoted official figures to assert that the crime rate in the state was less than that in BJP-ruled states, including Gujarat.

JD(U) National General Secretary and Bihar minister Shyam Rajak quoted figures from National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) to establish that the crime rate in Bihar was far less than those in BJP-ruled states of Gujarat, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.

BJP has been attacking Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar almost daily for the serial bomb blasts at Narendra Modi's rally on October 27 and has alleged that the situation in the state has deteriorated since it quit the government in June.

Quoting the NCRB report, Rajak told reporters that in 2012 the total number of recorded heinous crimes in Bihar was 1,60,271 compared to 3,62,649 in Gujarat, 3,24,845 in Madhya Pradesh and 3,18,615 in Chhattisgarh.

Even in terms of crime against women Bihar fared better than the three BJP-ruled states, he said.

In Bihar the crime rate against women was 23.41 per cent per 1 lakh in 2012, while it was 33.58 per cent in Gujarat, 47.75 percent in Madhya Pradesh and 34.38 percent in Chhattisgarh, Rajak said.

The better crime records were achieved notwithstanding the fact that Bihar has comparatively low ratio of availability of police personnel.

While Bihar has 67 police personnel for a population of one lakh, it is 174 in Chhattisgarh, 114 in Gujarat and 104 in Madhya Pradesh, he said.

Rajak claimed that the crime rate has decreased between June and August this year in Bihar after BJP quit the government.

A total 313 cases of murder was recorded in the state in June 2013 which came down to 299 in August this year. The cases of kidnapping too had been on the wane from 515 in June to 481 in August.

So too in the case of rape which decreased from 102 cases in June to 81 in August. The number of road loots too had gone down from 123 to 111 in the period, he said.

"BJP and RSS should stop making irresponsible allegations against the Nitish Kumar government and end the practice of Joseph Goebbels, the propaganda minister of Adolf Hitler to repeat lies," he added.
