Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhara Rao has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of usurping the powers of the new state and said he would soon hold a meeting with chief ministers of other states to resist these attempts.

Rao’s outbursts against the Prime Minister came after the Union home ministry sent a communication to the state chief secretary on Friday stating the Governor would have the ultimate powers, including his say in the postings of police officers, over the law-and-order machinery in the common capital region of Hyderabad.

He termed the move as a fascist action by Prime Minister Modi and said his government would not obey any norms that goes against the fundamental principles of Indian constitution.

The letter, second in a series,  was written in response to the objections raised by the state government on the governor’s authority over police covering the jurisdictions of two police commissionerates and the superintendent of police (SP) of the adjoining Rangareddy district. The Centre cited the the provisions of the AP Reorganisation Act while advising chief secretary to ensure the adherence to the prescribed norms by the state government.

The chief minister instructed chief secretary Rajiv Sharma to write a letter to the home ministry once again in protest against the stand taken by Government of India on the powers of the state government over the common capital region.  He also asked the officials to send out the copies of the home ministry’s letter to chief ministers of all the states.
