The Congress on Monday stepped up its attack on Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for his alleged role in the Professional Examination Board (PEB) scam in the state and called for his resignation.

Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh said crucial evidence in the scam, an excel sheet recovered from a computer by the special task force, had been tampered with to protect the chief minister. He alleged the special task force replaced Chouhan's name with that of Union minister Uma Bharati and others.

Reacting to Singh's charges, government spokesperson Narottam Mishra said: "This is a clear attempt to malign the image of the Chief Minister. The allegations are false and baseless. We have full faith in the special task force and special investigation team which are working under the direct monitoring of the High Court. We will probe these charges."

State authorities had cancelled admissions of 1,000 students after it was revealed they had got admissions in government medical colleges by fraudulent means. These students had allegedly paid proxies to take the entrance exam while their parents allegedly bribed senior officials of the Madhya Pradesh PEB.
