The twitter handle -- @RashtrapatiBhvn -- has a message "Rashtrapati Bhavan is now on Twitter. Please follow us for regular updates."
The account, which came into existence at 3 PM today and already has over 9,000 followers, is the first one being held by a President of the country ever since the micro-blogging site was launched in July 2006.
It was seen as an effort of the President's office to be in constant touch with the public.
Mukherjee was the first President to make available the day-to-day activities of the Rashtrapati Bhavan on FaceBook.
The Twitter had the picture of the President with winners of national awards, Shilp Guru Awards and Sant Kabir Awards for craftspersons and weavers.
