In the ongoing power struggle within the ruling Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh, an office bearer of the party today demanded that SP national president Mulayam Singh Yadav appoint chief minister Akhilesh Yadav to the top party post.
The letter by A S Nomani, who is also a member of Banda municipal council, has been addressed to Mulayam and marked to SP general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav, UP SP president Shivpal Singh Yadav and UP urban development minister Mohd Azam Khan.
Nomani lamented the party's youth leaders and cadre were anguished by the recent turn of events in SP.
While acknowledging the contribution of Mulayam for nurturing the party, the letter has cautioned against unnamed sycophants masquerading as advisors around him, who were only damaging the party internally.
Nomani noted if Akhilesh was not made the party's national president soon, SP would hit its nadir and never recover.
Reminding Mulayam that in 2012, Akhiliesh was handed over the 2012 election baton and later designated as the CM, Nomani demanded that Akhilesh be appointed the party president before 2017 polls, so that the youth cadres could be reenergised to bring back the party to power.
He claimed Akhilesh would steer the party to new heights in 2019 Lok Sabha polls and redeem the cherished dream of Mulayam to become the country's prime minister.
Meanwhile, Nomani even threatened that the youth leaders would self immolate if Akhilesh was not made the SP national president.
Akhilesh is charting his own course so far as election campaign is concerned.
Yesterday, he had shot off a letter to Mulayam informing about his decision to go ahead with 'Samajwadi Vikas Rath Yatra' from November 3.
The letter mentioned the Yatra was earlier scheduled from October 3, but got delayed due to certain reasons, even as other parties had already kicked off their campaigns.
SP is preparing to celebrate its silver jubilee function on November 5 in Lucknow and Akhilesh's Yatra could mean that he would skip the celebrations.
The sacked youth leaders have also announced to boycott the function and instead demanded their own reinstatement in party.
