One person drowned, four of his relatives were rescued and four others swam ashore while bathing in rough seas off the coast of Arichalmunai near Dhanushkodi today, police said.
They said bathing at Dhanushkodi had been banned as the sea was rough and treacherous. The nine member family were unaware of this and had gone for a bath.
They said Selva (21) was sucked into the sea by a giant wave and four others were rescued by the local people and hospitalised as they were unonscious.
Four others managed to swim ashore, police said.
