The members of one group were allied to Fazruddin, the Imam of a mosque at Afzalpur Pavati village here, while the other group owed allegiance to former village head Buniyad Ali.
According to police, Ali had constructed a new mosque in the village and Fazruddin was unhappy with the donations going to the new mosque.
Yesterday, when Ali with his group was returning after offering namaaz at the new mosque, Fazruddin's group allegedly attacked them, police said.
Police have registered cases against Fazruddin and 16 of his associates.
However, locals in the area claimed that over two dozen people from both sides were injured in the clashes.
