A 19-year-old girl who was abducted by a trio on the pretext of giving her a lift in their car in north Delhi, was rescued after a 6-km chase by the police.
The accused robbed the woman's male friend of his mobile phone and wallet before pushing him out of their moving car and speeding away with the girl.
The three accused, Sachin Choudhary (32), Shiv Kumar (32) and Saurabh (34), have been arrested. During interrogation, it emerged that they were drunk and were on a joy ride since afternoon looking for a target, Additional DCP (north) Aslam Khan said today.
According to police, the incident took place yesterday near Majnu ka Tila when the girl and her 20-year-old friend were waiting for a bus near Majnu ka Tila area. They had gone to Burari and were heading towards their residences in Wazirabad.
The trio in the car parked their vehicle nearby and one of them approached the two asking for bus route to Anand Vihar.
Soon, another approached the two asking for road direction and also tactfully managed to know where the two were heading towards.
The second person then came closer to them in his Hyundai car and offered a lift, to which the two friends agreed. Once they boarded the vehicle, they saw that two more persons, including the one who had approached them asking about bus route, were sitting inside.
The group then assaulted the girl's friend and allegedly robbed him of his phone and wallet before pushing him out of the moving car. By the time the boy stood up, the trio fled with the girl.
The boy raised an alarm and soon a PCR van was spotted nearby. Other PCR teams deployed in the district were informed and the car of the accused was intercepted after a nearly 6-km chase. With this the girl was rescued and the accused were arrested.
The girl told police that she was not sexually assaulted in the incident. Their interrogation has clearly shown that they were in a joy ride since afternoon, wandering around Timarpur area, a senior official said.
When records were checked, it turned out that one of the accused was earlier arrested in a case under Arms Act and another in a case of robbery, he said, adding that the three have been booked for abduction, criminal assault and robbery.
