Two persons have been arrested and a juvenile detained for allegedly robbing and killing a 60-year-old jeweller inside his shop in central Delhi's Karol Bagh last month, police said today.
They chose to rob the jeweller as they thought that the elderly man would be an easy target. They had been following the jeweller for the last few months and had gathered details about him, a police official said.
The body of Ravinder Kapoor was found in his shop on April 30 with his hands and legs tied and mouth shut with a tape. The accused had chosen to kill him on Sunday since they were aware that very few staff would be present in the shop then.
"We procured the footage from CCTV cameras installed at the spot and nearby areas," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Mandeep Singh Randhawa said.
In the footage, four persons were seen entering the building just before the time of incident. The footage was shared with shopkeepers and resident of nearby areas.
After zeroing in on one Sanjay, a trap was laid and he was nabbed along with his accomplice Sahil from Sonipat in Haryana, the officer said.
A juvenile was also detained from Sonipat this morning, while the fourth accused, Sanjay Chawla, is on the run, Randhawa said.
During interrogation, it was found that Sanjay had come in contact with Chawla while they were lodged in Tihar jail two to three years back. After they were released, they cheated many jewellers in Chandni Chowk and Karol Bagh area, he said.
Chawla had knowledge about the jewellers of Karol Bagh and Chandni Chowk.
On the day of incident, Sanjay, Chawla, Sahil and the juvenile went to Kapoor's shop on two motorcycles. They went upstairs of the shop and tied his hands and legs and put tape on his mouth which led to his death.
Then, they robbed the jewellery shop. In the meantime, Kapoor's servant Bhagirath arrived there. They tied him up also and decamped with the jewellery. Some of the robbed items have been recovered, police said.
