Two men allegedly posing as top leaders of Congress trade union cheated an NGO of Rs 3.5 lakh by promising to sanction a project of Union Tribal Affairs Ministry, police said today.
A case in this regard was registered yesterday following investigations into a complaint filed by NGO 'Vo-AK The Crow' with Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde in March, a senior police official said.
The NGO deputy director Presla Engtipi approached one of the accused, whom she knew for three years and had an office in Connaught Place under the banner of Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), for help in getting sanction for a project, the officials said.
He took their project report and later provided the NGO with a letter which sanctioned the project for them.
"After getting the letter, Engtipi approached the Ministry only to find out that no such letter was issued by it. When she encountered him, he promised to pay back the money but he did not," the official said.
He runs the office along with another person who claims to be the national president of INTUC.
In her complaint, Engtipi said she came to know that both the accused do not have any organisational responsibility in INTUC.
A case of cheating was registered against the duo.
