To get a flavour of the diversity of India, around 25,000 students from the UK would visit India over the next five years for short-term work assignments and learning courses.
Suchita Gokarn, head of education promotion at the British Council, today said from next year they are starting the 'Generation UK' programme which will bring UK students to India.
"This will deepen relation between the two countries and increase mobility among the people. Students will come for short work assignments in various organisations and teaching assistantships in schools," she told reporters here.
Besides this, the British Council is also tying up with various universities and educational institutes where UK students would get themselves enrolled for short-term courses ranging from two weeks to a month.
"We are calling this cultural immersion as the objective is to allow UK youngsters to get a feel of what India has to offer them," Gokarn said.
The objective of the initiative is to promote India as a destination to gain study and work experience and support the internationalisation of Indian companies and academic institutions.
The initiative will be an expansion of the 'Study India' programme under which few students come to India each year for studying short courses.
The official said they have got an overwhelming response as there are over 5000 applications for 200 positions.
"For the first year in 2015 we will have 200-300 students and gradually that would be increased," she said.
