252 drunken driving offences in Chandigarh on New Year eve

The drunken driving offences registered a sharp increase on New Year eve in Union Territory Chandigarh with 252 cases being reported as compared to last year's 104.
Twenty anti-drunken driving 'Nakas' were placed at various locations in the city.
"During the intervening night of December 31 and January 1, a total 252 motorists were prosecuted for drunken driving as compared to 104 motorists prosecuted for the same offence on the New Year eve a year back," a Chandigarh police spokesman said here today.
"Keeping in view the New Year Celebrations of 2017, Chandigarh Police had made large-scale arrangements to maintain law and order and also for the purpose of traffic regulation and traffic rules enforcement so that the citizens could celebrate the New Year without any inconvenience," he said.
About 2,000 police personnel had been deployed last night for law-and-order duties, including eight DSPs and 40 Inspectors.
"All the DSPs and Inspectors of Chandigarh Traffic Police were also present in the field and remained vigilant throughout from the point of view of traffic regulation and traffic rules enforcement. Apart from this, 187 Police personnel of Traffic wing, 80 Police personnel from IRB and 87 Home Guard Volunteers were also deployed for drunken driving Nakas.
"About 400 women police officials were also deployed for the duties. One Special lady police squad headed by one woman Inspector was deputed to move around the city for the help of women...," he said.
Chandigarh Police Control Room received 1,600 calls from 8 pm yesterday till 8 am today, out of which majority of calls were related to quarrels while some pertained to noise pollution and creating nuisance at public place, the spokesman said.
