Delhi Police arrested three men and recovered 1800 live cartridges, nine double barrel and two single barrel guns and claimed today to have busted a gang involved in largescale diversion in and illegal supply of legitimate factory-made weapons to criminals.
The accused identified as Ashok Singh (62), Rakesh Sharma (44) and Ajay Sharma (49) were arrested by the Special Cell of Delhi Police. 1800 cartridges of 7.65 mm bore, 0.22 mm bore and 0.315 mm bore along with the factory-built SBBL DBBL shot guns being smuggled into Delhi were recovered from them, police said.
"Sources deployed in Bhind and Morena in MP and Etah and Etawah of UP had revealed that apart from trade in Munger made illicit firearms, some seasoned criminals were also regularly diverting legitimate, factory-built firearms which otherwise require a license to own and carry into the hands of criminals and other unscrupulous elements of the society," said DCP (Special Cell) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav.
The syndicate involved licensed arms dealers and counterfeiters apart from criminals and peddlers. It was also learnt that factory-made firearms, if pilfered, attract a huge price in the contraband market, he added.
Yesterday, police had received a tip off that one Ashok Singh, an arms dealer of Etah, UP, who is a key player of the syndicate, would be coming to ISBT Sarai Kale Khan in a white Swift Dezire car for meeting some receivers.
Accordingly, a trap was laid. Ashok was spotted and the team waited patiently for some activity to happen. However, Ashok moved towards Wazirabad on the Ring Road and reached ISBT, Kashmiri Gate. At this juncture, another person boarded the vehicle and it moved towards a road going to Gopalpur.
"At a secluded spot, when suspect Ashok Singh was giving the delivery of a large bag to the person who had boarded his car at ISBT Kashmiri Gate, they were apprehended. On checking the bag, three DBBL shot guns and 500 cartridges of 7.65 mm bore were found concealed beneath pillows and other daily wear clothing," said Yadav.
On further checking of the dickey of the car, two more parcels were found. The first parcel had 1,300 rounds of 7.65 mm bore, 200 rounds of 0.315 mm bore and 200 rounds of 0.22 mm bore. The second parcel had six DBBL shot guns and two SBBL shot guns, police said.
