The accused Vipin (28), Predeep (35), Sonu (35) and Ankit (23) are all members of a gang based in east Delhi's Trilokpuri area. All of them were arrested under criminal cases earlier, DCP (South) Ishwar Singh said.
Major leads which helped police crack the case include the brand new alloy wheels of the Santro car in which the complainant, Sumit Chakraborty (55), was abducted on May 11, and the fluent English speaking skills of one of the accused, an official privy to the investigation said.
Pradeep was tracked first after police zeroed in on his Santro car in which he had installed alloy wheels around a fortnight back.
The fluent spoken English skills of Ankit, who is not even school educated, and his association with Vipin and Pradeep, informed by local sources, further ensured a convincing headway in the probe.
The gang had even used a fake wireless set with a pre-recorded message in Hindi to intimidate the victim, the official said.
Chakrabarty, who is a senior consultant of a
multinational company, was thrashed and robbed of cash and other belongings by a group of men who allegedly abducted him from south Delhi's Andrews Ganj area on the pretext of offering a lift in their car on May 11.
The incident took place at around 7 am when Chakrabarty was waiting at the Andrews Ganj bus stand to go to his office in Noida.
Two men approached him wanting to know the direction to Anand Vihar ISBT and while Chakraborty was speaking, Vipin came in a car and asked for way to Noida, they said.
During the journey, one of the passengers faked nausea and Ankit, who claimed to be a BSF personnel and spoke fluent English, pulled out a wireless set and started telling the person on the other side that some drunk men were with him in a car and he was going to bring them all to the nearest police station.
When Chakrabarty insisted on shifting to the middle seat to give way to the passenger who complained of vomiting, the other men started charging him with being drunk too.
They then took him blindfolded to an ATM kiosk on the highway leading to Agra and made him withdraw Rs 40,000 which they immediately snatched along with mobile phone, gold ring and other belongings.
The group then dropped him at a secluded stretch in south Delhi. The victim managed to reach a private hospital nearby from where he called up police.
