Four persons have been arrested for allegedly taking bets on Tuesday's Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings in the national capital, police said Wednesday.
The accused identified as Harish Arora (31), Nav Karan Singh (25), Ashish Mangal (21) and Gurbej Chhabra (36) were nabbed from a hotel in Delhi's Preet Vihar area on Tuesday following a tip-off, they said.
During the raid, the accused persons were caught red-handed tracking the match between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders on television and updating betting odds, win-loss data through mobile phones, police said.
The arrested were using one phone for obtaining online rates and other phones for passing on information to the punters and seeking bets, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (southeast) Chinmoy Biswal.
Interrogation revealed that the accused were organising the bets to "earn quick money" during this IPL season.
Gurbhej was well-versed with this system of betting and was previously arrested in a gambling case in 2007, the DCP said.
The accused used to book a hotel room during the matches and used to operate from there itself, officials said.
Biswal said the bookies were using the betting assistant 'I-book' software on their laptops to keep a record of their clients' bets.
