The epicentre of the earthquake was in Nepal and contiguous areas in Bihar, Director State Meteorological Department A K Sen told PTI.
Reports said the tremor, which occured at 9:02 pm, lasted for 10 seconds and was felt in Patna, Darbhanga, Araria, Munger, Supual and Madhubani among others.
Nepal falls in seismic zone five and earthquakes have been experienced in the Himalayan country from time to time.
Darbhanga, Madhubani and other areas in the Kosi region contiguous to the country have suffered its impact in the past too, Sen said.
The earthquake triggered panic among citizens in Patna and other affected parts as people ran out of their homes into open areas.
