A 75-year-old man has donated his liver and corneas at AIIMS, becoming the oldest for cadaver donation at the Institute.
Narsing Pal (75), hailing from Aligarh and a resident of Delhi, died of intra-cerebral hemorrhage (ICH), a type of stroke caused by bleeding within the brain tissue, on May 27.
Pal had been a diabetic for ten years and had been taken to G B Pant hospital in a serious condition from a private hospital on May 26. He was transferred to AIIMS Trauma Centre on May 30.
"Organs retrieved were liver and corneas but the kidney, heart and heart valves were not useful due to clinical condition. The liver was transplanted to a 59-year-old patient at Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences. The corneas have been preserved at AIIMS," said Rajeev Maikhuri, transplant coordinator, ORBO at AIIMS.
"We were informed by G B Pant hospital on May 28 and then we facilitated the transfer. He was transferred to AIIMS Trauma Centre from G B Pant hospital on May 30 and declared brain dead on 30th midnight.
"The consent was given by wife and son. The family expressed their wish to donate the corneas but after we counseled them they agreed to donate the organs," he said.
This was this year's seventh cadaver donation at AIIMS and second in a week.
