Pakistan's tainted left-arm pacer Muhammad Aamir will be able to resume his first-class cricket career this season if his team qualifies for the main rounds of the premier Quaid-e-Azam Trophy tournament.
Chief selector Haroon Rasheed said that although Aamir had been told to go through the reintegration and rehabilitation process designed for Salman Butt and Muhammad Asif but his case was different.
"This program does not allow these players to play any first class cricket atleast until February next year. But Aamir's case is different from that of Butt and Asif," he said.
"The International Cricket Council had allowed Aamir to resume playing cricket six months before the other two and he had already started going through the rehabilitation process of the PCB," Haroon said.
Aamir, Butt and Asif all completed their five-year bans for spot fixing last month and were cleared by the ICC to resume cricket but the PCB has put on hold an immediate comeback for former Test captain Butt and Asif.
The chief selector said because of this scenario if Aamir's team Sui Southern Gas qualified for the main rounds of the premier first class tournament he could play for them.
The left arm pacer has already picked up 17 wickets including a match haul of 10 wickets in two matches for Sui Gas in the non-first class but four-day matches of the qualifying rounds of the Quaid Trophy.
"I am just focusing on my cricket and doing well for my team. I want to convince everyone I am ready to be given a second chance to play top cricket," Aamir said.
He said he had received some offers through his agent to play in the Bangladsh Premier League planned from 25th November but had not made any decision as he would first have to seek advice and permission of the PCB and selectors.
"It would be great to be part of high profile event again but it all depends on what the board has in mind for me," he said.
Haroon also insisted that while Aamir had bowled well but he had yet to be tested in first class cricket.
"We are watching him but I think there is still a long way to go before we can talk about him returning to international cricket. He needs more time for many things One of them first to convince everyone he is a changed man and can be trusted again.
