Punjab's Leader of Opposition Sukhpal Singh Khaira today demanded a high-level probe into allegations made by two women claiming that senior police officers pushed them into drug addiction.

The women had on Tuesday complained to Health Minister Brahm Mohindra, during his visit to a women drug de-addiction centre in Kapurthala, that a deputy superintendent posted in Ferozepur and an inspector posted in Jalandhar had forced them to take drugs.

After visiting the women at the centre, Khaira alleged that the victims were discharged without proper treatment due to police pressure.

"I am surprised to note that the de-addiction centre was locked and the women were discharged without treatment allegedly under police pressure due to the involvement of senior police officers," said the AAP MLA.

He also sought a meeting with Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on July 2 to discuss the matter.

If the CM failed to give him an appointment he would stage a dharna in front of his residence, Khaira said.

The opposition leader in the Vidhan Sabha further demanded a special session in the house to discuss the rising drug menace in the state and criticised the chief minister over his alleged failure to rein in the problem.

Khaira also had a telephonic conversation with Kapurthala SSP Sandip Sharma and asked him to book the two accused police officers.

When contacted by PTI, Sharma said that he had informed the police commissioners of Jalandhar and Ludhiana-- from where the victims belong-- and that police was investigating the case.
