ACB sleuths seize over a kilogram of gold from BMC official

Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials who searched the bank locker of a Class-I officer who was arrested later, seized over a kilogram of gold, the ACB said here today evening.
In an official release, Thane's Deputy Superintendent of Police (ACB) Jairaj Chaparia stated that ACB officials searched a Canara Bank locker in the name of arrested Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Deputy Assessor and Collector (Vigilance) Sunil B Bane and recovered gold weighing 1.14 kilograms and silver weighing 20 grams, an ACB release said.
It is estimated that the market value of the seized gold and silver is around Rs 3 crore.

On June 17, Bane was arrested by ACB officials at night in Thane city in the process of accepting a Rs 3 lakh bribe from an octroi agent for not taking action against him.
After searching his residence, ACB officials seized Rs 8 lakh in cash and gold weighing 7.30 grams, besides documents pertaining to flats owned by him as well as his wife in Mulund and Goregaon, apart from purchase 23 guntas of land at Kankawli in the name of one 'Alose'.
The ACB also seized fixed deposit receipts of Canara Bank valued at Rs 80,000 and fixed deposit receipts in the name of his two daughters in different banks amounting Rs 5.59 lakh, besides LIC premium receipts valued at Rs 7.55 lakh in his name.

In addition to the above, the ACB seized documents pertaining to a Honda City, Innova and Scooty vehicles registered in his name, the ACB release said.
Incidentally, the ACB issued a second appeal to citizens, to come forward and give them information about property owned by the arrested officer and if he had taken any money from them as bribes for doing any favours.
It may recalled that while seeking his police remand, DGP R J Kadri had informed the court that ACB officials would like to search the bank locker of the arrested BMC official.
