Action on status of Indian NGOs deferred after Pak seeks info

With Pakistan seeking more information on three Indian NGOs' funding and operational activities, a UN committee has deferred action on recommending them for special consultative status.
The Committee on Non-Governmental Organisations opening its regular session for 2015 here yesterday, recommended 16 organisations for special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, and deferred action on the status of 17 others after Committee members requested further information from the candidates about details of their respective group's projects, partners, expenditures, sources of funding and relationship with UN system actors.
The Committee postponed consideration of the 'Akhil Bharatiya Sanskrutik Sangh' of India as Pakistan asked for more information about the group's monitoring, evaluation and impact, as well as why the organisation had registered itself as a national organisation, according to summary of the meeting posted on the UN website.

Action on status of the 'Disease Management Association of India' was also deferred as a representative of Pakistan asked how the organisation had funded the activities listed on its application.
On Indian NGO 'Eurasia Reiyukai,' Pakistan requested details on how the organisation planned to fund the activities listed on its application and raised further questions about its income statement in general.
The 19-member Committee vets applications submitted by non-governmental organisations, recommending general, special or roster status on the basis of such criteria as the applicant's mandate, governance and financial regime.

India sought more information on two of its NGOs, including the 'Human Rights Sanrakshan Sansthaa.'

The Indian official asked about the role of government officials in the functioning of the organisation, sought clarification about its number of members and questioned whether the organisation was national or international.
India also sought more details regarding 'India Water Foundation,' asking whether the organisation had undertaken any activities in neighbouring countries, and if it had other offices in India.
India sought information from a Nigerian NGO 'Global Community Health Foundation' on which activities the organisation planned to carry out in his country. The US also asked for clarification on the Nigerian organisation's work with the United Nations and on which types of projects it intended to carry out in several specific countries.
