Activists highlight success stories of rape, domestic violence

A gender awareness workshop highlighting success stories of rape and domestic violence survivors, who set a good example in the society, was held in the city today.
Speaking at the inaugural session of 'Emerging Identities, Increasing Controls and Violence against women: Examining Perspectives from Western and North Western India', activist and writer Urvashi Butalia shared the stories of women who fought back repression and raised their voices in the society.
The two-day event, which is a part of a series of workshops across the country, raised issues like domestic violence, female foeticide, crime against women and honour killing among others.

Butalia citied examples of three women, including a rape victim from Kahsmir for whom a group of lawyers came forward to secure justice.
The participants in this workshop came from different states including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi.
Kavita Srivastava, general secretary, People's Union for Civil Liberties added that preference for male child and emerging trend of aggressive masculinities in South Asian region, were some of the other issues discussed in the workshop.
