General Sher Muhammad Karimi and General John Campbell met General Raheel at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi amidst reports of a military operation by Afghan forces in the border province of Kunar and Nuristan against Tehreek-e- Taliban Pakistan (TTP) rebels.
Their visit came a week after General Raheel dashed to Kabul with evidence about presence of TTP militants in Afghanistan including its fugitive commander Mullah Fazlullah, who were involved in planning of the ghastly Peshawar school attack last week that killed 148 people, mostly children.
He pledged support to the Afghan Army chief and International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) commander in coordinated operations against TTP sanctuaries in the border areas.
The meeting discussed the overall security situation in the region and matters relating to militancy.
Pakistani media described the joint visit of General Karimi and General Campbell to Rawalpindi as an unusual move.
Later in the day, General Raheel also met Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and informed him about the meeting with Afghan and ISAF commanders.
