AIIMS administration has proposed to set up an AIIMS endowment fund under the Society's act by which it will be able to accept donations from alumni, various organisations and philanthropists for supporting academic activities at the institute.
"The purpose of the fund would be to accept donations from AIIMS alumni, various organisations and philanthropists for supporting academic activities at the institute such as research, training, student and faculty exchange programmes", said a senior official of AIIMS administration.
At present there is no mechanism by which the institute can accept such donations other than in a general pool. It was felt that a separate dedicated fund should be created for such a purpose, said the official.
"Such a fund can be used to accept donations in a co-ordinated manner, use the donation for the purpose it is meant for and to maintain its accounts with propoer documentation," the official said.
According to sources, this proposal was discussed and approved in principle by the faculty in the meeting held on March 3 this year.
This was discussed in the Governing Body meeting of AIIMS held earlier this month.
"The fund will be created with proper rules and regulations and a memorandum of understanding as required legally. The major aim of setting up such a fund is to encourage and advance the knowledge and practice of medical science in all possible ways for benefit of public at large," a doctor said.
Also the fund will be used to promote, facilitate and support research in medical sciences, training of doctors apart from providing a platform for organising regular scientific discussions, conferences, workshops, seminars, training and practical demonstration on subjects related to the medical science on national and international scale.
The fund will be also used to offer awards, scholarships, fellowships and stipends in promotion of Society's aims and to provide need based grants and donations and to establish funds for financial support of Societies Acedemic Programes and other needs.
