Amitav Ghosh celebrates 25th anniv of iconic 'Shadow Lines'

Twentyfive years after his award- winning classic, "Shadow Lines" was published, author Amitav Ghosh is celebrating with a special collectors' edition of the novel.
Printed on special, high-quality paper, with a ribbon bookmark and a slip cover, a limited edition of the book, first brought out in 1988 would be republished by Penguin India on September 13.
"Amitava wanted to do something special to mark the occasion. So we decided to republish it with special paper, a special flipcase cover and ribbon bow," a spokesperson from the publishing house said today.
In a post on his website, Ghosh said, "I will sign every copy and add a personalised note."

Priced at Rs 1,499, a total of 500 copies of the hardback special edition are now available for preorder on uRead.Com.
Acclaimed for its ideas, narrative structure and depth of storytelling, "Shadow Lines" had bagged Ghosh the 1989 Sahitya Akademi Award as well as the Ananda Puraskar.

Publishers will also be engaging with fans of Ghosh's book on a special Facebook page created to commemorate the occasion.
The page populated with interesting content would allow readers to discover Ghosh's book, according to publishers.
Exposing the idea of the nation state as an illusion, an arbitrary dissection of people, Ghosh has in his book depicted the absurd manner in which home can suddenly become enemy.

Author and columnist Khushwant Singh had previously said of the book, "This is how language should be used ... This is how a novel should be written".
