Mattel and producers Walter F Parkes, Laurie MacDonald and Amy Pascal have teamed up for the project, which is aimed at putting a contemporary spin on beauty, feminism and identity.
Soon after the announcement that the "Trainwreck" actress landed a major role in the upcoming film, people took to Twitter to respond to the news and most of them were not nice.
"If Barbie became obese and heinous to men, Amy Schumer is perfect," read one of the disgusting comments.
"Amy Schumer is to Barbie what Michael Moore is to GI Joe," another person who disagreed with Schumer's casting wrote.
"If Amy Schumer is Barbie, then Seth Rogen should be Ken," read another of the mean comments.
But some people have leaped to Schumer's defense. "The ONLY way I'd watch a movie about Barbie is if @amyschumer was starring in it," someone tweeted.
Another Twitter user posted, "Love these people criticizing the casting of Amy Schumer in 'Barbie.' If you bothered reading the synopsis, you'd know her casting makes sense."
After she's exiled, she sets a journey to the real world and eventually discovers that being unique is an asset.
The "Inside Amy Schumer" star is also expected to help with the script, re-writing an existing script with her sister Kim Caramele.
